the ticket's prospects on election day. >> i didn't feel excited like i did in the last election, with sarah palin and john mccain. so after last night, i got that adrenaline going and i'm pumped up and ready to roll. >> we had a drendrenaline that wouldn't believe. >> reporter: mitt romney will spend three of the first five post-debate days in this battleground state. even here, romney supporters admit before the debate they were worried about polls that showed their candidate behind. even their enthusiasm was luke-warm. >> with romney, before last night, i would say we were 50%, 55%. after last night we're at 100%. >> last night was energizing. it was neat to see him answer questions clearly with detail on questions that i had questions about myself. >> reporter: but obama advisers know their target audience is undecided and swing voters. they quickly rolled out this ad that romney's tax plan wouldn't hurt the middle class. romney supporters are convinced their candidate has changed the course of this campaign. and some are changing their plans, too, to start actively working on his behalf

: governor sarah palin. this is just incredible to me. can we see this? i know it's hard to because it's over my fat head, yes, but the poor cameramans saying, neil, your head's a planetary system, we can't get past it. if you can try though, it's interesting. that's senator of hatch of utah. i don't think he's saying president obama had a good night. as we pan the room and the throng, i saw portman, i saw robert gibbs i think. here's what's interesting. when this started, folks, remember what they said about each of their candidates. he's not a good debater. he's really not very good at these kind of one-on-one exchanges. he's all but unable to walk, talk, and chew gum at the same time. now, after the debates, they are all einsteins, and that they delivered a kind of a moment, and it was a home run. i suspect we'll probably see the vice presidential debates going into with the expectations low and afterwards saying how great they did afterwards. i have no problem with that. i built a college career on it. some of you argue a professional career. keep the expectations low, and shock them on t

, beep, beep, beep. >> stephanie: remember they used to do the sarah palin and hillary sketches on snl. when she was told to do the pitbull joke again. lipstick. there it is. very good. [ applause ] perfect. all right. paul ryan, he's been saying yeah, there's been some missteps. >> we've had some missteps but at the end of the day the choice is really clear. we're giving people a very clear choice. >> stephanie: yes, yes. clearer and clearer. and then he proceeded to screw it up a little more by saying -- >> it's -- you wouldn't -- i wouldn't -- >> stephanie: dana in maryland. >> caller: good morning, everybody. how you doin'? >> stephanie: good. >> caller: i saw pictures from seattle. it looked fun. i like ron reagan jr. he's awesome. >> stephanie: he's awesome. >> caller: okay. so yeah, the debates i just hope that they talk about women's issues. i think that obama can slam him there. >> stephanie: by the way -- have you seen the new ads that are supposed to appeal to women with all of the b

debater, but he's also rusty. the last debate he had was against sarah palin. i think debating paul ryan and sarah palin are two completely different animals. and we haven't seen him do a lot of debating. so, you know, let's hope that he doesn't show up as rusty. if not, it will really build on republican momentum. and i think it will change the tone of this race. two debates where the republicans can really change it. >> a lot of the president's supporters didn't think he spent enough time preparing for this debate. romney spent a lot more time preparing than the president did. how much time between now and next thursday should the vice president spend? get rid of his campaigning and start practicing, practicing, practicing a debate against paul ryan? >> look, first of all, mitt romney's been in dress rehearsal for opening night on broadway for five years. there's no way you can take that much time off. but that aside he had a great debate performance and i don't want to downplay that. it was a good debate performance. but i think the president should have put enough time on his schedul

? it sort of negates any positive effect. >> sure. it wasn't just the debates four years ago, but sarah palin's performance overall probably really did have a negative impact on john mccain. i mean, that's pretty clear. so yeah, sure, it's not without risk or without meaning. and then there's already been some evidence in polling that paul ryan has hurt mitt romney a little bit because of his association with the medicare voucher program that he's proposed. and they've even had to back away from that. that can't help in pennsylvania, either, which i believe is the third oldest state after florida and west virginia. >> all right. well, that certainly makes sense. philadelphia enquirer's thomas fitzgerald. thanks so much. good to talk with you. >> thanks, alex. >>> representative michele bachmann lost the gop primary but this week she picked up a major endorsement from -- speaking in a radio interview afterwards she laid out the focus of her campaign. >> this is the number one issue this year is the economy, job creation, how we can add more jobs and higher-paying jobs. i worked extremely

romney -- i understand what you're saying politically, but i think it's like sarah palin and biden, she got through and everybody said she did well. >> don't you think it's up to romney to tell -- >> i just want to say that clearly tonight, both candidates are the underdogs. who knows, there's room for both. but there is a difference between a zinger, which is what small campaigns think of their own candidate when they think he's small, but you want to demonstrate strength, and saying this is howly lead the country, those are the moments i paid for this microphone, and it can change the debate. >> mitt romney is closing the gap, it's getting closer in major swing states. stay tuned for that. you've been busy for a dead man. after you jumped ship in bangkok, i thought i'd lost you. >>> surfing is my life now. but who's going to .... >>> tell the world that priceline has even faster, easier ways to save you money. . . on hotels, flights & cars? you still have it. >>> i'll always have it. so this is it? >>> we'll see where the waves take me. sayonara, brah!
